MATTERS AT HAND: N.D. Senate race on national marquee
Heidi Heitkamp’s in and the race is on. That’s last week’s headline in North Dakota politics. A Democrat, Heitkamp said she’ll take on Republican Rick Berg, who wants to move to the U.S. Senate after a single term as the state’s lone congressman. The seat is available because Kent Conrad has chosen not to run for re-election. Heitkamp’s announcement means that North Dakota’s Senate race will be among the marquee attractions in the 2012 election cycle. It also means the state will be flooded with campaign advertising.

Paul Cline, Buckeye, Ariz., letter: Crystal must drain ‘seniority’ swamp
In recent weeks, many letters to the Herald have described how important seniority is to American Crystal Sugar’s union. In fact, if what I read is accurate, seniority is one of the main reasons the workers rejected American Crystal’s contract proposals. This is unfortunate.

Barry Nelson, Fargo, column: Crystal workers deserve unemployment benefits
Reality: North Dakota is short of workers. Jobs are going unfilled for lack of qualified applicants. North Dakota consistently has the lowest unemployment rate in the country. Employers complain that they cannot recruit workers. But here in North Dakota, we are seeing 1,300 hard-working and loyal workers locked out of their job. Why? Because they are unable to come to an agreement with their employer on a new labor contract.

RALPH KINGSBURY: Grand Fork’s motel-tax collections go up, up, up
Today, I fear this sense of community has disappeared from much of America. But one of the few places where it has continued is in rural areas, and that means North Dakota. Now, I fear the North Dakota Legislature is about to take on giant step toward destroying that community. It will save taxpayers a few pennies, maybe the cost of a Big Mac a year or so.
