Nice out means ice-out on Minnesota lakes
State climatologists are not predicting record early ice-outs this year, but from the Twin Cities to the Canadian border, lakes are expected to lose their ice about a week to 10 days earlier than average.

After an unusually slow start, walleye action on the Rainy River continues to improve each day. Anglers targeting sturgeon also are doing well, anchoring upstream from deeper holes and casting a glob of nightcrawlers and frozen shiners into the depths. In a word, the bite is on.

Wilferd Welin came to the big equipment auction Wednesday spread over the vast parking lot of the Alerus Center to watch, not buy. “We have a full line of equipment,” said Welin of the big farming operation he runs with his three sons between Alvarado and Argyle, Minn. “I’m just here to see how the sale goes.”

Trespass complaints by coyote hunters and reports of dead coyotes left in the road ditch were investigated. Questions about Firearm Safety Class schedules are coming in.
