ANN BAILEY: Hay, that was a hot day
As a girl growing up on the farm, I never had to worry about buying the hay that I fed my horse. My dad baled hay for our cattle and made sure he saved the cream of the crop for Socks and his pals, Ginger, Beauty, Gypsy and Socks, which belonged to my dad, brother and sister.

US cruises to lead in men's gymnastics qualifying
The Americans just might be able to back up their big talk. While perennial gymnastics powerhouses China and Japan bobbled and wobbled their way through men's qualifying Saturday, the Americans proved they really do have the goods to contend for the gold medal. They didn't count a single fall, and their final score of 275.342 is almost three points ahead of surprising Britain.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Racing in Grand Forks began with flatboats on Red
It wouldn’t seem like summer in Grand Forks without the whirring sounds from River Cities Speedway on Friday evenings. And the history kept by Jim Corcoran goes way back to George Winship, founder of the Herald. The editor once wrote that this city owes its existence to a flatboat race down the Red River in the fall of 1870.

Walleyes on the rocks: Good fishing and good laughs with Lake of the Woods guide Scott Edman
A more persistent breeze would have been welcome — that’s not something you say every day on Lake of the Woods — and we could have used a few more clouds to provide relief from the relentless sun. But those are minor quibbles when the prospect of a day on the big lake unfolds on a watery horizon that extends like a giant mirror in every direction.

Mr. East Grand Forks
In front and behind-the-scenes, no one cares more about EGF than Henry Tweten. When he has something to say — which is often — he says it. The 88-year-old’s words often tout East Grand Forks, where he has lived for all but the three years he was in the Army during World War II.

N.D.’s only recognized waterfall highlights ‘Seven Wonders of Ransom County’
The state’s only recognized natural waterfall — and the scenic river valley, dense hardwood forests, rolling sand hills and sprawling tall grass prairies surrounding it — stand in stark contrast to the flat, open terrain of much of eastern North Dakota. So much so that the woman who created Ransom County’s website dubbed this area’s features the Seven Wonders of Ransom County.

Steve Sulland, Grand Forks, letter: By fighting each other, activists hurt cause
I support anyone or any group working toward the goal of increasing the penalty for animal cruelty. And for those Herald readers who support only one group, I urge them to do so in a way that complements rather than undercuts the other’s efforts.

Slower pace suits champion horse
As a champion, race announcers called him Si My Shoes — as in "eat my dust." But in the slower-paced life of a retiree, the thoroughbred racehorse adopted by a Bath Township, Ohio, family in 2008 is known as Raleigh — short for the Magnificent Sir Raleigh, the name under which he competes today in equestrian contests.

Small towns see influx of people who are young, educated and there by choice
As soon as his big-city banking employer allowed him to work remotely, Andrew Lewis fled his traffic-jammed, necktie world to seek serenity. Now, when he turns away from the three computer screens on his desk, he can wander out the door of his old farmhouse and gaze at the rippling green carpet of crops that stretches beyond his 10-mile view.

Kristie Skunberg, Fargo, letter: Odds favor initiative to ‘stop animal-cruelty’
There are no guarantees that the Legislature will pass any bill, and that is why I support the ballot initiative of North Dakotans to Stop Animal Cruelty. The group’s measure is narrowly crafted to make the worst types of cruelty — such as maliciously or intentionally burning, crushing, suffocating, impaling or dismembering dogs, cats or horses – a felony.
