Federal funding requirement comes back to bite diversion
Sen. Larry Luick said Tuesday the Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion Project is too big for North Dakota to commit to without federal help. That’s why the Republican from Fairmount offered a floor amendment Tuesday that would require the Red River flood control project to receive federal funding before it can move forward -- an amendment that effectively stops the diversion in its tracks.

Duane "Andy" A. Anderson
Duane “Andy” Anderson, 77, of Grand Forks, ND passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2013 in his home, surrounded by family.

Duane Allen Anderson was born on November 30, 1935 in Grand Forks, ND the son of Melvin and Gertrude (McGrath) Anderson. He grew up and graduated from high school in Emerado. Duane served in the U.S. Army for four years before being honorably discharged. He married Darlene Clark on June 14, 1958 in Elmhurst, Ill. Duane worked Western Construction Co. and he and Darlene traveled to many places during that time before settling in Grand Forks and Emerado area. He then worked for Baseview Champlin, Home of Economy, CASE IH farm sales and in his later years he farmed which was his true passion.

Daniel Duane Rew was born on May 20, 1987 in Grand Forks, ND the son of Robby and Colleen (Kennedy) Rew. Daniel grew up in Grand Forks and attended school at Red River High School graduating with the Class of 2005. Daniel worked at Wal-Mart, I 29 Truck Stop, Hugo’s #5 in East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Truss Inc. Daniel was a member of the Minnkota Limited #563 Union.

East Grand Forks passes law limiting adult businesses
Without discussion Tuesday, the East Grand City Council passed two stop-gap laws dealing with adult-use businesses. One law repeals the city’s existing definitions of adult uses, which have been deemed to be too vague. The second law places a six-month moratorium on adult uses, giving the city time to more clearly define “adult use.”

Donald Jorgensen
Donald Jorgensen of Stephen, MN, passed away on Monday, April 8th, 2013 at age 90. He was born on the family farm on June 14th, 1922 to Nels and Selma(Lundin) Jorgensen. He attended the Happy Corner School, and graduated from the Northwest School at Crookston in 1942. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1942 through January, 1946. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Gilbertson at Hawley, MN, on Nov. 23, 1945. They farmed in Sinnott Township until retiring in 1982. They continued to live on the farm until moving to Stephen in 2006.

Donald was a lifetime member of St. Petri and First Lutheran churches, serving in numerous capacities, from Sunday School Teacher to Head usher, to what was probably his favorite, caretaker of the St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, located just one mile straight east of his kitchen window. He considered himself fortunate to have watched the sun rise over that cemetery almost every day of his life prior to moving off the farm, and the family considers itself fortunate to have many photos that he took of what he perceived to be the more spectacular ones.

JohnPaul Robert Gergen
JohnPaul Robert Gergen was born at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND, on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 12:18 p.m. He weighed just under 5 pounds and measured 16 inches long. He peacefully lived for approximately one hour, experiencing only love from his family and faith community during his short time spent with them.

JohnPaul is the son of Benjamin and Janelle Gergen of East Grand Forks, MN, and the younger brother of Peter Gergen. Immediately upon his birth, JohnPaul was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church by Monsignor David Baumgartner. JohnPaul was a very handsome redhead who was able to briefly open his eyes and move his arms. He taught many people about the sanctify of human life. JohnPaul will always be missed but remembered forever by all those whose life he touched.
