Wintering Cooper's Hawk
A Cooper’s hawk feeds on a pigeon Dec. 19 on the UND campus. The band on the hawk’s left leg reveals the bird was banded by Tim Driscoll, a UND faculty member who’s done extensive research on the birds. From the band information, Driscoll said the hawk is a female banded this past summer in East Grand Forks. Driscoll’s records also show the hawk was successful in fledging young last summer. Kimmerle’s photo was big news in the local birding community because it provided proof that local nesting Cooper’s hawks will occasionally overwinter here, as well.
