On Memorial Day, Fairview Cemetery will be alive with members of the Beltrami, Minn., community who come to honor their dead. Among them will be Robert and JoAnne Yuergens, Fairview Cemetery’s caretakers. The Yuergens, who live on a farm nearby, took over in 1993 when the former caretaker was ready to retire.

When I was growing up, my family’s Memorial Day weekend tradition was to visit cemeteries where my parents’ relatives are buried. In 1996, my dad died, and on Memorial Day 1997, my mom and Brian and I visited the cemetery to put flowers on his grave, her parents’ grave and Richard’s grave, along with my great-grandparents.

After 93 years, Civil War vet gets grave marker
A Civil War veteran whose Minnesota grave has been unmarked for nearly a century now has a military marker in honor of his service. About 100 people attended a dedication and service in Hewitt this weekend for Edgar Lewis. The soldier was injured in a battle in Arkansas, and later died in the Twin Cities in 1919.

Minnesota man accused in fatal punch wants charge dismissed
Forty-four-year-old Jamie Unverzagt died the day after he struck his head on the ground outside the American Legion post March 2. Prosecutors say the man who pushed Unverzagt, causing him to hit his head, is responsible for his death. The complaint says Unverzagt made derogatory comments about Trevor Morten's wife, so Morten pushed him after the two men argued in the Legion parking lot.
