Arral "AJ" Helgerson, 81, Grand Forks, died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Altru Hospital. AJ was born November 28, 1931 in Inwood, IA, the son of Alvin and Ida Helgerson. AJ spent most of his formative years in the Sioux Falls, SD area. He graduated from Washington High School and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. AJ entered the Marine Corps in 1952. He married Donna McNamara on August 8, 1953 in Sioux Falls. Following the Marine Corps, AJ worked for F.W. Woolworth Company and was transferred to Grand Forks, ND in 1960. In January 1965, he joined the Vaaler Insurance agency, working there until his retirement in 1992. AJ touched his children and others with his honesty and integrity. AJ was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was involved in many leadership positions there and also with many community organizations. AJ cherished his time at his Minnesota lake cottage where he created a wonderful gathering place for his family, friends and dogs. AJ is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna, children Jeff (Paula) Helgerson, Brooklyn Center, MN, Pam (Brian) Whalen, Grand Forks, ND, Tracy (Vince) Abentroth, Grand Forks, ND, David (Beth) Helgerson, Neenah, WI; grandchildren Tom, Anne and Carrie Helgerson; Jenny, Emily and Robert Whalen; Aimee and Matthew (Sarah) Abentroth; Brooke and Paige Helgerson; great-grandchildren Alex and Logan McClimon, and Avery Abentroth.AJ was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Greg Sande, and grandson Jon Abentroth. Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church, 5555 South Washington Street, Grand Forks, ND. A memorial service will be held onThursday, January 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the First Presbyterian Church, 5555 South Washington Street, Grand Forks, ND. Nick Chalaturnyk, 82, of Lancaster, Minnesota, died on January 19th at Altru Health Systems in Grand Forks.

Nicholas Chalaturnyk was born to John and Maria Chalaturnyk on March 17, 1930, in Gardenton, Manitoba, Canada. He was the youngest in a family of eleven. He attended school near Tolstoi, Manitoba. At 16 he began working for the Canadian Railroad. He later enlisted in the Royal Canadian Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a paratrooper. He worked various jobs including several years with Torro in Minneapolis and Motor Coach Industries in Pembina until his retirement in 1995.

Carlton J. Hendrickson
Carlton J. Hendrickson, 87, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013 in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Carlton Jarlin Hendrickson was born July 26, 1925 in Mekinock, ND the son of Theodore and Cora (Burtness) Hendrickson. He was raised on the family farm near Mekinock He entered the United States Army on April 14, 1945 at Fort Snelling, MN. During World War II, he served as a military policeman at Pearl Harbor and in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged from military service on December 7, 1946 at Fort Lewis, WA. He returned to Grand Forks and was employed at Eddy’s Bakery. He moved to Hoople, ND, where he owned and operated a bar. He then moved to Grafton, ND, where he owned and operated the Club 45 Bar. Later, he moved to Grand Forks and managed a coin shop and was employed as part time dry waller until his retirement in 2003. Carlton married Blenda Kvamme in Grand Forks. She preceded him in death. During his retirement years, he enjoyed restoring and refinishing furniture as well as gardening.

Larry A. Overgaard, 66, East Grand Forks, died Friday, Jan 18th at Altru Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Larry was born on Aug. 13, 1946 in Crookston, MN, son of Albert and Belva (Berg) Overgaard. Larry attended Central High School in Crookston, graduating in 1964. He joined the US Navy in 1967, serving on the USS Wainwright during the Vietnam war. He was married on May 16, 1970 to Elizabeth Hegge in Crookston. He worked for the US Government for 27 years.

With family at his side, Stephen "Skip" Rucinski, 66, passed away on January 19, 2013.

Skip was born on November 23, 1946, in Newark, New Jersey, to Walter and Natalie (Zino) Rucinski. In 1964, he graduated from Newark's West Side High School, where he was a standout baseball player. Outside of class, Skip worked as an apprentice draftsman.
