We lament the arrival of a polarized society, meaning that we are shifting away from the middle ground and a chasm is growing between the proponents and opponents of public issues. With this chasm separating us, it is easy to become uncivil.

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: Gardeners shiver through chilly summer
This was not a good summer for vegetable gardeners. With late spring turning into mild winter, the corn never had a chance. Neither did anything else. The calendar may have alleged otherwise, but this year, we had April, April, October and October. That was summer.

Kennedy visited Park River in 1960
Ted Kennedy, before he became a presidential candidate himself and the “liberal lion” of the U.S. Senate, campaigned in North Dakota for his brother, John F. Kennedy, only weeks before JFK was elected president Nov. 8, 1960. It remains a fond memory for those who met him at the time and mourn his death Tuesday.

LLOYD OMDAHL COLUMN: Searching for causes of binge drinking
North Dakota’s ranking as No. 1 in binge drinking should come as no surprise when the state also ranks No. 1 in underage drinking. Drinkers are just graduating upward. Neither should it be a surprise that North Dakota’s universities are having problems with drinking and that UND ranks among the nation’s top 20 party schools.
