ANN BAILEY: Rain is good, in manageable doses
“When it rains, it pours.” There are times in my life when that old saying has been true figuratively and other times, literally. This past week, I was reminded of it the literal sense.

‘Pink slime’ in Grand Forks area schools, not in stores
The controversial meat substance is largely out of grocery stores. One meat manager even boasted "We're 100 percent clear of the slime." But the substance may still be served in area schools, which are supplied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The department plans to discontinue the practice, though school officials say they don't see what the big deal is.

The Labor Department said March 16 that the consumer price index rose 0.4 percent in February, the largest increase in 10 months. Gas prices rose 6 percent to account for most of the gain.

Problem gambler realizes addiction isn't about money, but numbing feelings
Curt’s drug was the slot machine. The local man could spend hours plugging dollars into the slots. In three hours, he could go through $500. At one point, he’d hit the betting button so many times that he developed carpal tunnel syndrome. Curt may have told himself he was looking for a big payout, but today he knows better. When he gambled, any anxiety or pain was replaced by a merciful numbness.

No clear way of knowing if 'pink slime' is in ground beef, unless you buy organic
All this angst over "pink slime" has made one thing clear: We don't always know what we're getting when we bite into a big juicy burger. Which leaves unanswered some of the most basic questions in the debate over what the meat industry calls lean finely textured beef, a processed meat filler that experts say has found its way into much of the ground beef consumed in the United States.

Tide comes up with liquid detergent-filled tablets to make laundry easier
It took eight years, 450 product sketches, 6,000 consumer tests and hundreds of millions of dollars for Procter & Gamble to create something that it hopes will be destroyed in the wash. Tide Pods are palm-size, liquid detergent-filled tablets that are designed to be tossed in the washer to take the measuring cups — and messiness — out of laundry. P&G says the product, which hit store shelves last month, is its biggest innovation in laundry in about a quarter of a century.
