RALPH KINGSBURY: Crystal is a business, not a welfare agency
About 20 years ago, co-ops were all the rage in the upper Midwest. Led by American Crystal Sugar and Dakota Growers in Carrington, N.D., farmer-owned and value-added businesses were going to make us all rich. As for American Crystal, today it is the most successful agricultural investment in the region. But there are problems, some of which were created by poor management decisions.

Paul Cline, Buckeye, Ariz., letter: Labor dispute violates no one’s ‘human rights’
In the letter, the board tries to equate the American Crystal labor dispute to a violation of the workers’ human rights. But this hubris is ridiculous. The world is a very bad place at times: genocide, the systematic rape of civilian populations in an effort to emasculate the enemy’s soldiers, torture. These are examples of human rights violations.

Welcome to the November News Quiz, known in some circles as the 21-pound cancerous tumor. I’m insulted by that depiction. It weighs 18 pounds, tops. For the most part, November was a good month. It featured record highs in the 50s and ended without snow on the ground.
