Campaigns against tobacco use by teens have nearly halved the percentage of North Dakota high school students who report smoking cigarettes, from 40.6 percent in 1999 to 21.1 percent in 2007, according to the state Health Department’s Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control. But the percentage of students in grades 9 through 12 who report using “spit tobacco,” after falling from 15.1 percent in 1999 to 10.3 percent in 2003, appears to be on a slight uptick.

Good news for Valley City
It’s still likely to be a tense two weeks as the Sheyenne River remains at historic flood levels, but this flood-weary town got good news Wednesday: an advisory from hydrologists with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that the river may have crested earlier this week and probably won’t climb to the previously projected level of nearly 22 feet this weekend.

Over the Valley: So much water
'Haven’t seen so much water since Katrina'
It was like flying over Lake of the Woods, only the trees were brown and leafless, the water muddy brown, and some of the “islands” were unnaturally square and trailing archipelagos of grain bins.

Pain and pride
Owens, Stauss reminisce
As they waited for the radio guys to work through technical difficulties before putting them on the air this morning, two old comrades-in-arms sat and reminisced about the days 12 years ago when they worked together and the nation watched. “We were a good team,” former Grand Forks Mayor Pat Owens said. “Yes, we were,” East Grand Forks Mayor Lynn Stauss said.

A closer look at the mighty Red
Unless you live in one of the tall new residential buildings downtown or know somebody who has a room with a view, the county building — new since the 1997 flood — may be your best shot for contemplating the Red River at flood this year. By ones and twos and by gangs and extended families, people wander in, ride the elevator and come to the east-facing windows on the sixth floor, where they stand and stare … and compare.
