COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: Committee dreams of earmarks
'Dorgan’s leaving office, so he can do what he wants, even get us an earmark for speed bumps,' said Garvey. 'It’ll take 10 years for a new senator to get enough clout to get us speed bumps. It’s now or never.'

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: With Dorgan goes ‘our share’ of earmarks
It will take years before a new senator — Republican or Democrat — will be able to build the relationships necessary to break through the fiscal barriers ahead.

Profs say Dorgan decision a big N.D. political event, but not the biggest
There’s no question that Sen. Byron Dorgan’s retirement could alter North Dakota’s political landscape. The popular politician has been part of the Democratic-NPL Party’s longstanding lock on the congressional delegation in a state that otherwise is dominated by Republicans.

LLOYD OMDAHL COLUMN: It’s safer to admit you’re old and be cautious
I just had another birthday. It’s none of your business which one, but you should guess that anyone who started a government career in the Gov. Norman Brunsdale administration is older than lignite coal. In fact, you have to be old even to know that Norman Brunsdale had an administration.

Three Amigos no more
It is a sense of humor, including a willingness to accept a well-turned dig, which Sen. Byron Dorgan shares with the two other veterans of the state’s congressional delegation, also Democrats: Sen. Kent Conrad and Rep. Earl Pomeroy. When together, they often “are in great high spirits, amiable and funny, laughing with each other, teasing each other,” Carvell said.

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: Merit selection of N.D. judges may return
If we were honest, we would admit that most of us lack the information and understanding to make rational decisions on the qualifications of judges.

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: Remember 1918, and get that flu shot
The official estimate for North Dakota was 1,378 deaths from the 1918 flu. But in a 2007 story, the Bismarck Tribune applied the national mortality rate to North Dakota and came up with 3,235. A 2009 publication of the State Health Department claims that 5,100 died.

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: Committee says, ‘No kids, no Christmas’
“Christmas just snuck up on us,” Chairperson Ork Dorken explained. “We haven’t done a thing about a community Christmas for the kids.” “What kids?” barked Old Sievert. “The last kid left town 20 years ago.”

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: North Dakota Lottery remains a scam
That $12 million in prizes represents around 45 percent of Lottery receipts. That’s got to be some form of fraud. Robbing banks would be more honest when we remember that the casinos on the American Indian reservations pay out 80 percent to 90 percent.

It isn’t necessary to scandalize the issue with unfounded assumptions and scare tactics. At present, the legislation has plenty of flaws. There is no need to exaggerate.

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL: Every North Dakota town name has a story
Most of our major cities went through this name change trauma. Douglas Wick of Bismarck spent 10 years tracking early place names and, in 1988, published North Dakota Place Names, a 238-page book packed with brief descriptions of 3,000 place names. He followed some of these name changes.
