Grand Forks’ Kreis experiencing a bumpy sophomore season in minor leagues
The summer of 2011 was an unforgettable one for Alex Kreis. The follow-up in 2012, however — well, so far it has been one Kreis would probably like to forget. The right-hander got off to a slow start pitching for the Nationals’ Class A team in Hagerstown, Md. Then, a severe case of pneumonia has kept Kreis sidelined from early May through most of July.

AREA BASEBALL: Strikeouts pile up for Langdon pitcher
Size doesn’t give a clear picture of what Kalton Agnes does on the pitching mound. The Langdon 17-year-old pitcher is hardly imposing, as he’s only 5 feet, 10 inches in height and approximately 130 pounds. Agnes is 3-1 for Langdon with a 1.11 earned run average.

FOREST RIVER: Smaller and less busy, but still the town hangs on
In 1987, Front Street — Forest River’s main street — was considerably busier than it is today. It boasted a bank, a cafe, a grocery store, a bar, a post office, an American Legion hall, a senior center, two gas stations, a grain elevator, a bean broker, a commercial potato farm complex, an oil distributor, a fertilizer dealer, and more. How long can it last, we asked? Twenty-five years later, Forest River manages to hang on in spite of the continuing depopulation of rural America. New residents have moved in and former residents moved back.

BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: Grand Forks Royals scoring with aggressiveness
The Grand Forks Royals are producing a lot of runs without benefit of a lot of hits. But the Royals still average 5.9 runs a game. They’re not doing it with power — the team has three home runs, two by Kaden Monette and one by Grant Campbell. Instead, the Royals rely on aggressiveness.

LEGION BASEBALL: Grafton still searching for state title
Joey Demers has played in a combined total of six state tournaments in his Grafton High School and American Legion baseball careers. But, for all that success, something is missing. “We’ve been second so many times,” Demers said. “I’d take several of those state tournament (appearances) and trade them in for one state championship if I could."

LEGION BASEBALL: Park River revives team after five year hiatus
Jay Thompson last put away the baseball gear at the end of an American Legion season in 2007. Since then, there hasn’t been enough interest here to field a team. It took a late surge, but summer baseball is back. Park River has a 15-player roster, the majority of whom are still in the age 15-and-under Babe Ruth and playing at both levels.
