3 being inducted into N.D. Sports Hall of Fame
Two former major league baseball players and a legendary high school basketball coach are being inducted into the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame. Darin Erstad, Rick Helling and Ed Beyer will be enshrined July 14 at the Jamestown Civic Center.

With two minutes to play in Friday’s Minnesota Section 8AA championship game, Perham coach Dave Cresap tried to talk to his players during a timeout. By that stage of the game, however, his voice had lost the fight against the constant cheering of the crowd. But in the end his players had understood just enough of what Cresap had to say as the Yellowjackets successfully defended their section crown with a 47-42 victory over Bagley.

N.D. BOYS CLASS A STATE BASKETBALL TOURNEY: Red River takes title over Fargo Shanley
The longer championship drought ended Saturday night at the Fargodome. Mack Arvidson poured in a game-high 30 points and drained the clinching foul shot with five seconds remaining. His performance lifted Grand Forks Red River to a 78-74 victory against Fargo Shanley for the North Dakota Class A state boys basketball championship. Red River (23-2) earned its first state championship since 1969 with the victory. The Roughriders hadn’t played in a title game since 1970.

Red River state basketball title may begin to change traditions
It’s not Batman and Robin. It’s definitely not spaghetti and meatballs. When you think of Red River High School athletics, boys basketball isn’t the next thing that comes to mind. With a tradition-rich boys hockey program and tennis teams that have dominated the state for better than a decade, boys basketball has been an afterthought at best. But the Roughriders 78-74 win over Fargo Shanley on Saturday in the Class A state championship game at the Fargodome might go a long way to changing that notion.
