Parts of Ely, Minn. ordered to evacuate due to wildfires
Crews this afternoon are battling a fast-moving forest fire just outside Ely that apparently started when a vehicle drove over a downed power line. Eyewitnesses in Ely said flames could be seen from the city and smoke was enveloping the town. Parts of Ely south of White Street and east of 12th Avenue East have been ordered to evacuate by Ely Mayor Roger Skraba. Power is out to part of town, including part of Ely.

Someone set several fires in wildlife areas of grass and trees Sunday in Polk County, two that each burned 120 acres or more, said Polk County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Tadman. The state fire marshal will investigate the fires. No suspects have been identified or questioned yet, Tadman said.

NWS: Spring thaw to speed up
According to Greg Gust from the weather service office in Grand Forks in a news release Tuesday, “snow melt is expected to accelerate through next week. Above-normal temperatures are expected to ripen existing snow pack and begin the initial snow melt runoff process across the Red River Basin . . . from this weekend and throughout next week.
