The U.S. sugar program seems to be on track to be continued in the 2012 Farm Bill, Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said Friday. “We need to continue the no-cost sugar program and it needs to be part of the farm bill, and I believe it will be,” he said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a pilot program to provide crop insurance for camelina in selected counties in Montana and North Dakota beginning with the 2012 crop year. Oil from crushed camelina seeds can be converted into biofuel.

According to Paul Telander, regional wildlife supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources in Bemidji, the harvest is down about 30 percent in the far northern areas, 8 to 10 percent in the Bemidji-Park Rapids area, 27 percent in the western part of the region and 7 to 15 percent in the far southwest portion of the region. Regionwide, the deer kill is down about 13 percent, but season continues through today in some of the easternmost permit areas. Season in most of northwest Minnesota ended Nov. 13.
