COUNTRY SCRIBE: History tends to repeat itself in Boston
Spent the past week in Boston touring historic sites. The focus of the trip was on the Revolutionary War, which, it seems, fewer and fewer people even bother to study.

THEIR OPINION: Help end intolerance at UND
GRAND FORKS — During the past year, UND and North Dakota State University seem to have seen increases in incidents that most Americans find offensive. From the sorority Indian party at UND to NDSU’s blackface and this spring’s swastikas and the “flamer” comments that appeared with the swastikas, we have experienced the full pain and humiliation that these types of events have on our campus and community.

COUNTRY SCRIBE: Lies, lies and more lies
As a kid, lying was easy to understand. It was wrong. If you stole the lollipop, you stole the lollipop. If you got caught, you fessed up. Lying about the deed was as bad as the deed itself.

COUNTRY SCRIBE: There are many nap types, some better than others
As a life-long napper, I have become connoisseur of naps. Naps come in different shapes, sizes and depths. All nap types have their place, but some naps are more rewarding than others.

Time to move Memorial Day
It seems odd that Memorial Day, a holiday for remembering the departed, arrives just when our land is teeming with new life.

Home-grown vegetables ease strain on the pocketbook
It’s easy to grow plenty of vegetables in limited space. Even with a pint-sized garden or containers, gardeners can make use of every square inch and produce plenty of food for the table.

COUNTRY SCRIBE: Frogs, salmon and coffee
My 96-year-old great Aunt Olive has lived a long and eventful life. As an infant, her father took her to hear Teddy Roosevelt speak –– not because she’d understand what was going on, but just so she could later say she had been in the presence of the famous president.

IN THE MAIL: Column took unfair swipes at Clinton
GRAND FORKS — The April 11 Country Scribe column by Eric Bergeson, an independent writer whose work appears in the Herald and other papers in the region, has to represent an all-time low for the Herald’s journalistic standards (“All hail Queen Hillary,” Prairie Country, April 11, Page 5).

All hail Queen Hillary
Last Friday, a little group of us drove to Grand Forks to see Senators Obama and Clinton. We arrived too late. The shuttle driver from the remote parking lot wouldn’t take us. The arena was full.

Air puffs at the airport
Passing through the Orwellian world of airport security just got more surreal. Last weekend, in addition to the familiar humiliation of taking off my boots and belt, I had to pass through something called a “General Electric Entry Scanner.”
