Scientists mine NDSU botanist's treasure trove of climate records
Between 1907 and 1961, professor and botanist O.A. Stevens for what eventually became North Dakota State University traveled the state, documenting everything he could find and compiling diligent records on how plants responded to differences in temperature and weather. Now, as scientists study how global climate change affects plant life, his century-old notes have turned into a treasure trove of data.

PRAIRIE GARDENER: Wisconsin botanical garden is a beauty
Beauty, inspiration and education are terms that can be used to describe the Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Wisconsin’s capital city. On a recent bus tour, the Prairie Gardener along with 49 others from this region who were headed back home from an East Coast break with Judy’s Leisure Tours of Fargo, had a chance to visit both the outdoor and indoor gardens. With stormy weather possible that day, the choices ensured at least one venue would work.

N.D. farmers rebound from flood last year
Customers are tossing back more beer this spring than last at Drinks Inc. on Main Street in Mohall, and it has a lot to do with the barley farmers are once again planting in the fields around the town of about 1,000 people. A year ago, many tractors and seeders in northwest North Dakota sat idle as snowmelt, heavy rains and overflowing rivers swamped fields and roads. A record number of acres went unplanted, putting a strain on farmers' wallets. That carried over to small-town businesses that depend largely on farmers' spending for their livelihoods.
