Measure 5, the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Initiative, is being promoted and funded by the Humane Society of the United States. ANN BAILEY: Saying goodbye to old friends
By far the most challenging part of horse ownership is saying goodbye to the horses when they die. Over the years, my family and I have buried eight horses. All of them lived well into the 20s and beyond, which I think makes it harder, not easier to lose them.

Most of North Dakota has been altered by human hands, and those areas that have not been altered soon will be. We must keep some areas untouched so our children know what the landscape was like before we changed it.

Shane Anderson, Towner, N.D., letter: Why I’m skeptical of Measure 5
If Herald readers feel something needs to be done about animal cruelty, I’d urge them to put the issue in the hands of the North Dakota professionals who know about animal welfare. That means calling on our legislative leaders to draft a bill that’ll be worded by North Dakotans for North Dakota animals and will leave outside interest groups outside.

ANN BAILEY: "Mom, I’ll remember this day when I’m 30"
For much of my life, autumn was near the bottom of the list. It probably really wasn’t so much that I minded fall, it was more that it was more that I dreaded what came after it. I think it was a combination of moving back to the farm and a resolve to live life one day at a time that changed the way I feel about fall.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is not being honest with North Dakotans when he attacks Measure 5. He says lawmakers “did not have time” to work out the details of an animal cruelty bill in the 2011 session, when, in fact, they voted down a proposal even to study the issue.
