GEORGE WILL COLUMN: GM morphs into a jobs program
“I,” said the president, who is inordinately fond of the first-person singular pronoun, “want to disabuse people of this notion that somehow we enjoy meddling in the private sector.” He said that in March, when the government already owned 80 percent of AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Griffey, Mariners top Twins
With one of his smooth and still-powerful left-handed swings, Ken Griffey Jr. roused the Seattle Mariners and sent a virtual Mother’s Day card sailing over the right-field wall. “It’s a cheap way of me not buying my mom a gift,” Griffey joked after Seattle’s 5-3 comeback victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday stopped the Mariners’ six-game losing streak.

Twins hand Mariners 6th straight loss
Joe Mauer doesn't hit many home runs — just 47 since he broke into the big leagues in 2004. So when he went deep in consecutive games for the first time since 2005, Mauer could only laugh when his bigger, badder buddy — Justin Morneau — did the same thing right behind him just to show it's not as hard as Mauer sometimes makes it look.

FACES AND PLACES: IRISH PRIDE -- WDAZ sports anchor Pat Sweeney is proud of his Irish heritage
The patron saint of Ireland will have a place of honor in Pat Sweeney’s household on March 17 — just as he does on the other 364 days of the year.
A painted picture of St. Patrick, for whom Sweeney, one of Grand Forks’ most well-known Irishmen was named, is on the wall of his home, next to his family coat of arms. “That Saint Patrick, I’ve had that since I was a kid,” says Sweeney. Then he notes to a visitor that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated as a religious holiday in Ireland. Not many people know that, Sweeney says, but he learned the little piece of Irish trivia when he was a child growing up in St. Paul. Each year Pat O’Brien, a film actor and longtime grand marshal for the St. Patrick’s Day parade in St. Paul, would note that fact, Sweeney said.
