McNamara opens his morning talk show on KNOX-AM radio with a recording of the Pledge of Allegiance and the strains of the National Anthem or God Bless America. Today, officially designated in 1877 as Flag Day, Old Glory, as usual, will hang from the pole on the garage of McNamara’s home in northwest Grand Forks.

Jack Dalrymple and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem got similar letters.

May 30 event honors the spirit of Kvidt, who died in 2005Dewey Kvidt loved to exercise and being outdoors. So triathlons and duathlons were right up his alley. “He was just a very supportive, very upbeat,” said friend Lisa Knudson. “He liked the atmosphere, the comraderie.” So when Kvidt died suddenly at age 50 in 2005, Knudson led a charge to organize a race in Kvidt’s honor.

Recently, I had the opportunity to don a penguin costume and jump into a pool of icy cold water, all in the name of a good cause. I, and about 100 others, braved near-zero temperatures to take turns diving into a frosty pool (really an extra large refuse dumpster) to help raise money for Special Olympics.
