Corban Knight entered the UND coaches’ office on crutches Saturday morning and tried to talk the staff into letting him play at night. He did not succeed. Mario Lamoureux, who has battled significant injuries throughout the season and was forced to sit out Friday night, did talk his way into the lineup. While neither one of them figured into the scoresheet during UND’s 1-0 victory over the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday night, their actions set the tone for their teammates who helped grind out two WCHA points in an ugly game.

During a penalty kill last weekend at Alaska Anchorage, UND coach Dave Hakstol had center Corban Knight take five straight defensive-zone faceoffs. Knight won all of them. UND easily killed the Seawolves power play and went on to win the game by three goals. The sequence was overlooked in the final analysis of the game, which has become par for the course for Knight.

Will the real UND hockey team please stand up and be recognized? And soon? Having been close to college hockey for more than 40 years as a reporter and fan, I’ve been able to pick up on the identity of a team fairly early in the season more often than not. But 14 games into this season, I can say I have no clue what the trademark of this team is, or will be.
