UND MEN'S HOCKEY: Gaarder earns his spot in exhibition game

MEN'S HOCKEY: UND grinds out a win
Kristo’s goal leads the way in 1-0 victory
Corban Knight entered the UND coaches’ office on crutches Saturday morning and tried to talk the staff into letting him play at night. He did not succeed. Mario Lamoureux, who has battled significant injuries throughout the season and was forced to sit out Friday night, did talk his way into the lineup. While neither one of them figured into the scoresheet during UND’s 1-0 victory over the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday night, their actions set the tone for their teammates who helped grind out two WCHA points in an ugly game.

UND MEN'S HOCKEY: Knight does it all for UND
During a penalty kill last weekend at Alaska Anchorage, UND coach Dave Hakstol had center Corban Knight take five straight defensive-zone faceoffs. Knight won all of them. UND easily killed the Seawolves power play and went on to win the game by three goals. The sequence was overlooked in the final analysis of the game, which has become par for the course for Knight.

VIRG FOSS: This UND team still searching for an identity
Will the real UND hockey team please stand up and be recognized? And soon? Having been close to college hockey for more than 40 years as a reporter and fan, I’ve been able to pick up on the identity of a team fairly early in the season more often than not. But 14 games into this season, I can say I have no clue what the trademark of this team is, or will be.

MEN'S HOCKEY: Sioux hope to avoid Last Frontier distractions
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Perhaps it’s the six-hour plane ride. Maybe it’s the three-hour time difference. Or maybe it’s the empty rink, the lack of atmosphere and the big, tough-to-play against home team. Whatever it is, the fortunes of the UND men’s hockey team have been far different up here in the Last Frontier against Alaska Anchorage than they have been in Grand Forks.

MEN'S HOCKEY: Sioux win 4-3, sweep Colorado College
Six days ago, the UND men’s hockey team took the ice in the early morning for a hard skate after a loss to Bemidji State. Later in the day, the team found out they didn’t receive any votes in the USCHO poll for the first time since 2002. Obviously, the Sioux had no intentions of making a habit out of these things this season.

UND MENS HOCKEY: Sioux outlast Colorado College 7-6
The UND men’s hockey team got to hear about how it can’t score goals all week long. Then, the Sioux went out Friday night and showed that it has potential to keep pace with anyone. In a wild, back-and-forth, wide-open shootout, the Sioux were able to pop the last goal and beat No. 4 Colorado College 7-6 in front of 11,375 in Ralph Engelstad Arena.
