Hal Gershman, Grand Forks, letter: First Night would fit at Alerus
My suggestion, for what it is worth, is that First Night Committee consider moving the entire event to the Alerus Center. This would eliminate the need for shuttle buses, bundling and unbundling children and so on.

Conan O'Brien makes his debut on NBC's 'The Tonight Show'
He joined a line of predecessors _ Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno _ on television's most historic late-night franchise. "I think I've timed this move perfectly," he said in his opening monologue. "I'm on a last-place network, I moved to a state that's bankrupt and 'The Tonight Show' is sponsored by General Motors."

TRAVEL: Keukenhof gardens are worth the trip to Amsterdam
Serendipity brought us to Holland when the spring flowers were in bloom, but the spectacle is worth planning a trip around. I went to Germany to visit my daughter, who is working there temporarily. A month or so before I arrived, she found round-trip plane tickets for a weekend jaunt from Hamburg to Amsterdam for about $125. They were too inexpensive — and Amsterdam too alluring — to pass up.

German prison: Demjanjuk fit for prison
John Demjanjuk, 89, is fit enough to remain in custody at Germany's Stadelheim prison, officials said today. Demjanjuk is being held on suspicion of acting as an accessory to the murder of 29,000 people at a Nazi death camp and doctors at Stadelheim found him fit enough to remain in detention there, the prison said. Had he been unwell, the 89-year-old retired U.S. autoworker could have been transferred to a hospital.

Pro baseball: Mauer sparks Twins in return to lineup
MINNEAPOLIS — Joe Mauer brought a big smile back to the dugout after hitting a home run in his first at-bat, and his teammates were just as quick to needle him about his exceptional talent. Is it really THAT easy, they jokingly asked? Mauer looked like a natural in his delayed season debut and scored three times, and Justin Morneau’s go-ahead two-run shot sent the Twins to a 7-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

BOOK REVIEW: A small town with a big payoff
A move from the big bad city of Boston to a quiet small college town in Iowa may not sound exciting but it does sound safer. A new town, a new house and a new job are chances for fresh starts. But Barry Award-winning author Sean Doolittle expertly makes the relocation of college professors Paul and Sara Callaway a claustrophobic lesson in fear in “Safer.” The author of four superior paperback originals, Doolittle’s debut in hardcover delivers an invigorating look at obsession, manipulation and personal boundaries.

'TEXTUAL HARASSMENT': Stalkers turn to cell phones, texting
As text messaging has boomed in recent years, it has also given rise to so-called "textual harassment." Text messages antagonize recipients in a way that is not easily ignored: Most people are never far from their cell phones, and the gadgets tend to blink and chirp until unopened messages are acknowledged. Adding another sting, the victims are often charged by their cell phone companies for receiving the messages.

RYAN BAKKEN: Boy Scouts are 200 Below Zero Heroes
You dream of lying naked on the equator. Weatherman John Wheeler has become the anti-Christ. Swindler Bernie Madoff seems warm by comparison. Well, quit your whining. Forgive the sexism, but it’s time to man up. More accurately, it’s time to boy up. That’s boy as in Boy Scout.

BOOK REVIEW: ‘Renegades’ is a stylish, clever crime yarn
The Antelope Valley is a vast stretch of high desert north of Los Angeles, where thousands of affordable homes have been thrown up and where urban gangs are already starting to move in. The sheriff’s department considers it Siberia, but Charlie Hood has asked to be assigned here, preferring to patrol at night and alone.
