Nancy Lawson
The heart of the Lawson family, loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Nancy Lee (Spicer) “Nan” Lawson, surrounded by loving family, was called to heaven by our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Nancy was born on April 22, 1940, the daughter of Henry and Lorene (Olmstead) Spicer. She grew up in Grand Forks and attended St. Michaels School. In her younger years, Nan was a carhop at Jacoby’s Drive Inn in Grand Forks. Nan was married to the love of her life, Walter Lawson, on August 16, 1958 in the Arvilla Presbyterian Church. The couple was married for 54 wonderful years. They made their home on a dairy farm south of Arvilla where she was a wife, mother and homemaker to her 5 children. Walt and Nan retired and spent the rest of their lives in Larimore. Family and friends were the passion of Nancy’s life. She always opened her home to anyone who wanted to visit over a fresh pot of coffee. She was filled with compassion and kindness and chose to use these gifts in helping others while she worked as a CNA for 30 years in Larimore and Northwood. Nan loved listening to music while working around the house as she cleaned and danced. With a zest for life, she loved to bowl, play cards, cook, chat, dance, and care for her family, She was a Sunday School teacher, active in the Ladies Aide and lifelong member of the Arvilla Presbyterian Church; president of the Arvilla-Emerado Lioness Club as well as a lifelong member. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt; her two grandchildren, Michael and Amanda; her parents; and her siblings, Peggy, Jackie, Allen, Evelyn, and Darrell.

Marvin D. Burns, age 89 of Grafton, ND passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.
Marvin D. Burns, the son of the late Patrick C. and Alice Mary (Callahan) Burns, was born June 6, 1923 in Grafton, ND. He grew up and attended school in Auburn. Following his education, he began farming with his dad and brothers. He served in the US Navy in WWII. Following his discharge he returned to Auburn to continue farming. While farming was his true passion, he also worked as a lineman for the Rural Electric Association, at the starch plant and Borden's in Grafton, and for American Crystal in Drayton. He was united in marriage to Shirley Torkelson on July 21, 1946. The couple made their home on the family farm near Auburn. Marvin retired from farming in 2006, and the couple moved into Auburn in 2009.

The victim of a brutal sexual assault in East Grand Forks last May said she was “shattered” when a Crookston judge sentenced one of her attackers to less than a year in jail. The “presumptive” minimum sentence for the first-degree criminal sexual conduct to which Jose Soto Jr. pleaded guilty is 12 years in prison, under Minnesota guidelines; the maximum is 30 years.

E. Allen Johnson, 67, of Grand Forks, ND died Thursday, March 14, 2013 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
E. Allen Johnson was born on May 20, 1945 in Grafton, ND the son of Elmer and Esther Johnson. He graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1963. Allen received his Commercial Pilot certificate at Wakefield Flight Service in Devils Lake and graduated from UND in 1969 with a Bachelor degree in economics and political science. He served in the US Navy and received his commission at the Naval Aviation Command at NAS Pensacola in 1969. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he earned his Certified Flight Instructor certificate and was also a Designated Pilot Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration. After 10 years as a corporate pilot for Northern Cable TV and Kloster Dakota Franchising he became a flight instructor and lecturer for UND Aerospace. Allen retired in 2011.
