ANN BAILEY: Spring has arrived right on time
As a North Dakotan, I’m accustomed to hearing about spring arriving in other parts of the country long before it has sprung here. As I looked out of my kitchen window into a front yard knee-deep in snow, I could only imagine what it must be like to have trees leafing out and flowers poking up out of the ground.

RYAN BAKKEN: Here comes the March news quiz
As far as the month of March goes, 2012’s was a dandy. The weather was superb. The state’s economy boomed beyond comprehension. And the sports plate was full, including Grand Forks Red River winning its first state boys basketball title since 1969, when the players’ hair was long and the uniform shorts were short, the opposite of today.

ALWAYS IN SEASON: Sparrow season runs all year, peaks in spring
Sparrow season is upon us, and it’s time for tips on finding and identifying sparrows. Actually, sparrow season never really ends here. Some species can be found most of the year. Several species are nesters, and some spend the winter, depending on weather conditions. Spring is a good time for sparrows because a number of species spend time here as they move north to their nesting grounds. Some of these species are in the area now; some will show up a bit later. The same is true of nesting species. Some have arrived. Some are awaited.

UND MEN'S BASEBALL: Bison slip past Sioux
Unearned run is only score in quick series opener
It’s a sign of a real pitcher’s duel when the only run in a nine-inning game comes when a player who reached on an infield single eventually scores from second base on another infield single. North Dakota State junior John Straka and UND freshman Andrew Thome matched each other pitch for pitch Friday afternoon, but the Bison took advantage of an unearned run to beat the Sioux 1-0 at Kraft Field in the opener of a four-game series.

Birders await confirmation but believe peregrine pair is back
They can’t say for sure yet, but local birders seem fairly convinced that Terminator and Roosevelt have returned once again to Grand Forks. The peregrine falcon couple, a local item since 2009, was spotted this week nesting atop a tower on the UND campus, where they were relocated from their original domicile on the late “Smiley” water tower.

$48 million in state funds distributed Friday
Nearly $15 million was distributed to 16 counties in northeastern North Dakota on Friday. The Legislature approved the funding in two bills last year for counties that received less than $500,000 from the oil and gas gross production tax during the 2011 fiscal year. That resulted in a $3.2 million boost to transportation funding in Grand Forks County on Friday, including $1.2 million of highway funding for the city of Grand Forks.
