John R. Farrell
John Robert Farrell, age 89, of Larimore, ND, passed away on May 16, 2013 in Northwood, ND following a brief illness. John was born December 11, 1923 in Larimore, the second of four boys, to John Leo (Lee) and Catherine Marie (Shide) Farrell, and was a lifelong resident of the Larimore area. He and his brothers grew up learning to love farming, a love he carried throughout his adult life. John graduated from Larimore High School, where he was active in The Future Farmers of America, serving as president of the local chapter and represented Larimore as State Treasurer. He was honored as valedictorian of the 1941 high school graduating class. Following high school John worked as a mechanic at Jarman and Shide Implement in Larimore. In 1946 he married Beulah Marie Lawson in Larimore. They soon began farming near Larimore as a member of the Elk Valley Farms, an association they maintained for over 40 years. Following his retirement from farming in 1987, John set up a repair shop in the Coast to Coast hardware store in Larimore, where he fixed lawn mowers and small engines for an additional 20 years until his final retirement at age 85. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church.
John is survived by his children Mary (Peter) Bilden, Boone, IA, Joe (Donna) Farrell, Grand Forks, and Alice (Harold) DeVore, Pearland, TX; grandchildren Leigh (Hank) Gray, Stillwater, MN, Michael Bilden, Minneapolis, MN, Scott Farrell, Minneapolis, MN, Anthony Farrell, Grand Forks, and Aryn (Paul) De Lisi, Houston, TX; great-grandchildren Davis and Colin Gray, Zachary and Lauren Farrell, Anna and Victoria De Lisi; brothers James of Royal, AK and Kenneth (Helen) Farrell, Larimore and sister-in-law Bonnie (Eugene) Farrell, Larimore, sister-in-law Renee (Buck) Lawson, Fargo, and sister-in-law Alice (Gordie) Eider, Grand Forks.

Phydella A. “Bunny” Bertsch
Phydella A. “Bunny” Bertsch, 85, of Grand Forks, ND passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Phydella Ann Landowski was born June 10, 1927 in Drayton, ND the daughter of Max and Irma (Keegan) Landowski. As a longtime resident of Grand Forks, Bunny attended school, met and married Linus Bertsch. Together, they raised their four children and owned and operated L. Bertsch Trenching. They wed on January 4, 1947 and celebrated 52 years of marriage. Bunny and Liney always told the story of how they met when she was working at the Dakota Theater and he drove cab. She caught his eye as he drove by. Both Bunny and Liney loved to dance and won numerous dance competitions at the old State’s Ballroom. Bunny was also an avid golfer and served as President of both Lincoln and Grand Forks Country Club’s Ladies Golf. As a member of St. Michael’s Altar Society, she volunteered for several years. She was a stay-at-home mom and worked inside the home with the family business. In later years, she served as a volunteer with the Foster Grandparent Program in Holy Family School library alongside her daughter.

Marvin Lee
Marvin Lee, 96, of Northwood, ND passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, 2013 at 2:00pm at West Union Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, ND. A visitation will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00pm with a 7:00pm prayer service at the Bilden Funeral Home in Northwood.
Marvin Henry Lee was born April 13, 1917 to Halvor and Minnie (Berger) Lee. He attended Hillside School, one mile south of the farm, where he completed 8th grade. His father died in 1936 and he stayed at home until 1938. He was raised to manhood in Loretta Township. Marvin remembers the crops in 1934 as bring poor, rusting out in 1935, and no crop at all in 1936. In 1939 and 1940, he worked for Gust Skjoiten. In 1941, he worked harvest in South Dakota, Kansas, Del Rapids and west.
