GF middle school puts focus on the outdoors with Outdoors Club
The smile on Jordan Donohue’s face was nearly as wide as the Red River, and it didn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Catching a dandy catfish can do that to a guy, especially a 12-year-old who’s just landed perhaps his biggest cat ever.

MATTERS AT HAND: Insult the state, but not the Capitol building
North Dakota has absorbed a couple of insults in the past couple of weeks, one of them trivial and one of them hurtful. The suggestion that North Dakota is “the worst place on earth” (made in a movie called “The Five-Year Engagement”) is easy to shrug off. Probably nobody who lives here thinks it, and if anybody did, they could go somewhere else and find out that it’s not true. The suggestion that North Dakota’s Capitol building is architecturally lacking: Well, that one stings a bit.

Glen Weber, Starkweather, N.D., letter: If property tax goes, what will replace it?
As a local mayor, I neither have the time nor the inclination to drive to Bismarck to ask our state legislators for the money needed to operate our city. I urge all North Dakotans to consider the real facts, and vote no on Measure 2.

GOP ignores veto threat, passes student loan bill
Republicans defied a veto threat and the House voted Friday to prevent federal loan costs from doubling for millions of college students. The vote gave the GOP a momentary election-year triumph on a bill that has become enmeshed in partisan battles over the economy, women's issues and President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Peter Welte, Grand Forks, column: ‘Think tank’ omits downsides of Measure 2
“Perhaps the best thing about the Beacon Hill Institute is its commitment to factual analyses,” Narloch writes. Really? Is it realistic to model eliminating $856 million in tax revenue and not replacing any of that lost tax revenue? Is that a laudable commitment to factual analyses?
