Marvin Arthur Birkholz was born to Fred William Birkholz and Lydia (Otto) Birkholz on March 25, 1914 at Charles City, Iowa; the family moved to Grand Forks one year later. Thrust into responsibility at a young age, Marvin actively farmed until 1988. The big German met a small Czech, Violet Kopecky, in 1942; the two were united in marriage on July 2nd of that year.

Marian Sobolik was born on September 4, 1919 in Forest River, ND. She was the daughter of James and Anna Poole Henry. She earned her teacher's degree from Mayville State Teacher's College and taught for 3 years in a one room school house. She married Fritz Sobolik on Jan. 26, 1944. They farmed together until Fritz passed away in March, 1981. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Grand Forks where she lived until 2009. She then lived with family in Seabrook, Tx.

John Edward Conneran
John Edward Conneran, age 59, of Grand Forks, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.

John E. Conneran was born July 21, 1953 in Crookston, MN, the son of Claire (Dubuque) Conneran and the late Lester John Conneran. He grew up and attended school in Fisher, graduating from Fisher High School in 1971. He then attended the University of Minnesota Crookston, and later graduated from Bemidji State. In 1975 he began working for Northwestern Bell, now Century Link, where he was currently working. He was united in marriage to Linda Bodensteiner on June 9, 1984 in Walhalla, ND. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Grand Forks.

Zona L. Swanson
Zona L. Swanson, 89, of Grand Forks, ND passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in Valley Eldercare Center, Grand Forks. Zona was born on November 14, 1923 at Orr, ND, the daughter of Fred L. and Hilda Neumann of Orr, ND. She grew up to womanhood in the area. She attended the Orr School for twelve years. To further her education she attended Mayville State Teachers College receiving an AA in 1943 and a BA in 1959. In 1966, she attained a Masters in Education at the University of North Dakota. In June of 1943 she married Lyle Swanson and was a farmer’s wife for ten years before moving to Larimore, ND. She was meant to be a teacher as she spent 38 years doing what she enjoyed. As an elementary teacher, she taught in a Larimore rural school (1950-1952); grades 5-8 in Arvilla (1952-1954); grades 1-8 in Kempton (1954-1959); grades 5 and 7 at the Grand Forks Air Force Base (1959-1969); and grade 6 in Grand Forks (1969-1989) and then retired. Zona was as active leader and participant in the Grand Forks Education Association, (president) North Dakota Classroom Teacher’s Association (Bismarck), Girl Scouts, Larimore church/Sunday school, Civil Air Patrol, and Farmer’s Union. Zona was an avid doll and teddy bear collector, having some very good ones. She especially enjoyed collecting Steiff teddy bears. She also liked to read a good book, most of them by Danielle Steel. At one time she collected stamps. Zona also participated in Lyle’s antique interests by traveling to antique and flea market shows with him. She enjoyed hearing from former students especially at Christmas time and even for wedding and graduation announcements. Zona especially enjoyed and cherished her two grandchildren from the time they were born and grown to adults. Left to cherish her memories are her husband Lyle; daughter, Barbara Jean Serr (special friend Jim Lienhart) Bismarck, ND; son, Daniel R. and Virginia (Miller) Swanson, Grand Forks, ND; granddaughter, Kim A. Serr, Surprise, AZ; and grandson Derek D. Swanson, Eagan, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dwight Neumann of NC; and sister Inez Brueckner of WA. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Amundson Funeral Home in Grand Forks. Visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial service. Dr. Ben J. Clayburgh
Bennie James Clayburgh was born in Scobey, Montana, on January 31, 1924, the son of Anna (Horvick) and Marcus Clayburgh. Ben liked to say ‘once a Montanan, always a Montanan’ but he considered Grand Forks his home town. He attended South Junior High and graduated from Central High School in 1941. Ben passed away on Monday, January 21, 2013, 10 days short of his 89th birthday. Ben married his college sweetheart, Mina Tennison on June 23, 1947. She passed away in 1968. On January 3, 1970, Ben married Beverly Manternach in Moorhead, MN.

Ben enlisted as a Private in the U.S. Army in 1942. Following basic training he was assigned to Service Command Unit 3772, University of North Dakota, where he took pre-med courses; Washington Jefferson College, Washington, PA, for nine months; and performed general duties in the neuro-psychiatric section of Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado for a period of four months. He was then transferred back to UND where he was a student in medicine for fifteen months. Recalled by the military in 1950 during the Korean conflict, Ben was stationed at Ellsworth AF Base in South Dakota and at a base in London serving as a flight surgeon, retiring from the Air Force in June of 1953.
