Image of a brother: Northwood man finds memories in Depression-era photo
Maybe you remember the picture and the unfinished story that went with it. More than 70 years ago, toward the end of the Great Depression and just before America entered World War II, famed American photographer John Vachon traveled through North Dakota, looking for images of what the country and its people were like at that great transitional time. On a sidewalk in a little Nelson County railroad town, he found a boy in a wagon.

Walleyes draw fans to Minnesota egg-stripping station
At the DNR walleye egg-stripping station just off the Whitefish Chain's Delta Bay, the DNR is in the process of gathering 693 quarts of walleye eggs for the state's walleye-stocking efforts. With about 125,000 eggs per quart, that's more than 86 million eggs. But 31 was the number of interest to non-DNR types on hand at what has, through the years, become a major spectator experience. That's the biggest walleye — in inches — that's come through the station so far this egg-stripping season.

Strong Indonesian quakes cause panic, not tsunami
Two massive earthquakes triggered back-to-back tsunami warnings for Indonesia on Wednesday, sending panicked residents fleeing to high ground in cars and on the backs of motorcycles. No deadly waves or serious damage resulted, and a watch for much of the Indian Ocean was lifted after a few hours.

JEFF TIEDEMAN: Salsa — it starts in the spring
Our unseasonably nice weather this spring has a lot of the people chomping at the bit. Some have already sown a few vegetables such as potatoes and peas, which typically are the first of the season. You can grow most of the ingredients for salsa in your own garden.

Expected corn boom could cause seed shortage
Agriculture officials say an expected boom in corn plantings this spring could cause a shortage of corn seed. The U.S. Agriculture Department says North Dakota farmers are expected to plant 3.4 million acres of corn this year. That's a 52 percent increase, the largest in the country. South Dakota Agriculture Secretary Walt Bones says the national increase in demand will put pressure on seed stocks, particularly for new hybrid varieties of corn.

Stroke victims gather on UND campus to reclaim lives
The words come one by one in a steady voice, as if each enunciated word was dispensed rather than spoken. “I was at home on a Saturday night, and I was playing bridge on the computer,” Leila Olson says. Slowly, she reaches to touch the side of her head. “I was a speech pathologist for 32 years,” she says, struggling slightly with the word that had defined her adult working life in the Grand Forks public schools. “So I knew it was a stroke.”
