Ray Stinar died the other day. Unexpectedly, at 69. I really didn’t get to know him until later in life, when he became the boys basketball coach at East Grand Forks Senior High.

Foss: The ‘Boys of Fall’ return to celebrate Oles’ season
Abraham Lincoln once said, “It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” That is precisely why the Boys of Fall — those of us who played on the 1960 Midwest Conference football championship team at St. Olaf College — felt a spring in our steps recently.

'Slap Shot' as philosophy
Grand Forks is a hockey town, but the question of whether it has a “hockey mentality” will be up for discussion when the UND Department of Philosophy offers a free viewing of the 1977 movie “Slap Shot” at 7 tonight in the Empire Arts Center.

Virg Foss: Late Sioux surge becomes trademark
“Listen my children, and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.” — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1860. My tale for today isn’t as riveting as Longfellow’s classic poem. But it ties in with today’s opponent for the Sioux hockey team, Yale University, so it’s a bit more timely.

The pockets of dense fog sprinkled around the St. Paul area Friday were nothing compared to the dark cloud that descended upon the Warroad Warriors.
