Major General Wallace D. Hegg
March 23, 1935-February 13, 2013
Major General Wallace D. Hegg past away Wednesday in Suncity West, Az. He was the son of Olavus and Luella Hegg of Northwood, N.D. Wally married Maxine Bilden of Northwood on July 17, 1955. He was a 1957 graduate of NDSU with a BS in Industrial Engineering, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and entered active duty with the US Air Force in January 1958. He was assigned to the 11th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Duluth, Minn. as an interceptor pilot until his release from active duty in 1963. Returning to Fargo, he joined the North Dakota Air National Guard. In 1977 he attended the National War College in residence, in Washington D.C. and in 1983 assumed command of the North Dakota ANG 119th Fighter Interceptor group, the "Happy Hooligans". He was promoted to and federally recognized as a Major General after accepting the position as ANG Assistant to the Commander, Air Force Materiel Command in 1992. He retired in 1995 with more than 7500 flying hours as a command pilot, having flown 11 different aircraft.
