Building up higher education in North Dakota
Chancellor Hamid Shirvani already has overseen sweeping changes to higher education after only six months on the job. But he said many of the changes are simply a matter of fully empowering the North Dakota University System by following through on suggestions dating back to the 1980s that hadn’t become a reality – until now.

MATTERS AT HAND: The economic implications of admission standards
Ralph Kingsbury, a former member of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education, likes to tell about the Walsh County farmer who reacted to news that the state university system might impose admission standards in this way: “I pay taxes and my son has a right to flunk out of the university.” That’s about to change.

MATTERS AT HAND: No cliffs in state legislatures, but plenty of issues
Now that the election is well behind us, we can turn to the business end of politics, governing — or attempting to govern. No doubt this business is toughest in Washington, where a fiscal cliff lies just ahead. There are no cliffs in Bismarck or St. Paul, but the impending legislative sessions offer the potential of spectacle, nevertheless. Challenges loom in both state capitols.

Duaine Espegard, Grand Forks, column: To reform higher ed, N.D.’s chancellor needs staff
North Dakota is entering a new era, and it’s imperative that we make good decisions about where we invest the proceeds of our prosperity. What better investment than in the education of the generation who will lead our transformation from the state that has been the country’s best-kept secret to the state that quickly is becoming the envy of the world?
