VIRG FOSS: Time to reflect, look ahead
So this is it, then, my last column for the Herald for the next five months. Summer vacation has arrived on my contract with the newspaper to write a weekly column seven months of the year.

VIRG FOSS: Change may-or may not-be coming for college hockey
As I considered topics for my next-to-last column for the Herald until next fall, a theme that kept popping up was change or even a lack thereof. What certainly is lacking is a change from winter weather to spring that would then leapfrog us into glorious summer.

VIRG FOSS: End of hockey season, but not winter weather
I spent much of Thursday watching two games on ice on TV (college hockey’s NCAA Frozen Four semifinals) and a few scary moments later that night feeling my van skating over ice.

VIRG FOSS: UND's hockey season, condensed
Even though UND’s hockey season has ended, there’s far more to write about than space allows. With that in mind, I’ll condense a short series of topics into one column and offer up my comments.

VIRG FOSS: Lena will be a fine addition at the lake cabin
Last week I received an email from pet search service Petfinder.com about a cocker spaniel mix dog available right here in Grand Forks, shockingly enough. Within a day, I was the proud owner of a female spaniel mix. In memory of Ole, I named this dog Lena..

VIRG FOSS: Goaltending the key for UND in national tournament
Let me start this off by saying that in my playing days in NCAA Division III hockey, I was a goalie. So in any game I watch, at any level of play, I pay particular attention to goaltending on both ends of the rink.

VIRG FOSS: Coaching legends
I would guess that not a lot of casual college hockey fans, especially those not located on the East Coast, know much about Jack Parker. The 68-year-old Parker, head coach of his Alma Mater Boston University the last 40 years, announced his retirement this week, effective when this season ends.

VIRG FOSS: A true sports fan
I came to a full understanding of what a true sports fan is the other day as I underwent the second colonoscopy of my life — and hopefully my last. A true fan is one who stays loyal to his team, win or lose, a champion or not.

VIRG FOSS: Don't bite the hand that feeds you
I’ve known Marcus Fuller, who reports on University of Minnesota men’s basketball for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, for about 10 years, from when he was an intern on the Grand Forks Herald sports staff. I’ve known radio sportscaster Paul Ralston for a number of years as well, as he worked his way up the ranks locally. This week, both of them used the “choke” word in their coverage of college basketball teams.

VIRG FOSS: The best of both worlds
Other than aching knees that bark at me more every day, life in retirement is generally good. For example, I can pretty much do what I want, when I want. So when my phone rang a week ago Friday and Herald sports editor Wayne Nelson asked what my plans were for the night, I quickly told him my intentions were to be a couch potato and watch the UND/Omaha men’s game on TV.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Lamoureux breaks WCHA all-time scoring record in 7-0 shutout
Jocelyne Lamoureux collected a career-best six assists, and set the all-time WCHA record for career points and assists. She missed by just one assist of tying the NCAA record for assists in a game (7) set by Harvard’s Jennifer Botterill (2002) in North Dakota’s 7-0 blanking of visiting Bemidji State.

VIRG FOSS: UND's great novelty game
I was considering topics for this week’s column the other night when I walked into a local business and sat down at a table. A woman walked over and said, “Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like Mickey Rooney?”

VIRG FOSS: A tough goodbye to a great coach
They held a funeral in Northfield, Minn., on Tuesday and it broke my heart that icy roads prevented me from being there. The service was for Tom Porter, 83, who was my football and hockey coach at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

VIRG FOSS: North Dakota Minnesota rivalry needs to continue
Not in last week’s column, not in a million more words, could I paint a more compelling reason why the North Dakota-Minnesota hockey rivalry needs to continue on a yearly basis down the road.

VIRG FOSS: Fans, players suffer without UND-Minnesota rivalry
Will someone please send Minnesota Gophers hockey coach Don Lucia a pair of dancing shoes and a reminder that it takes two to tango? How else can one explain Lucia’s sidestepping, one-man mission to destroy college hockey’s greatest rivalry.

VIRG FOSS: UND has all the makings of a Frozen Four team
It’s been about 35 years since I last laced on a pair of skates and played some hockey. So after I drove from Grand Forks on Wednesday to my lake cabin near Bemidji, I was shocked to find the makings of a hockey rink in my front yard.

VIRG FOSS: USA goes for the gold
Every gold medal won by the U.S. in hockey — in the Olympic Games or the World Junior — has had at least one player, coach or father of a future gold medalist from UND connected to it. And this year, UND rookie Rocco Grimaldi is skating for the U.S., a good omen indeed.

VIRG FOSS: Two favorite seasons, conflicting feelings
One of the presents my granddaughter Katie gave me for Christmas was a wooden sign that reads, “A day at the lake is worth a month in town.” The sign is now attached to the back of my Lake Beltrami cabin.

VIRG FOSS: Time heals all wounds
I sit in front of my computer a few nights before Christmas, trying to write my weekly sports-related column for this newspaper. On this night, it all seems to useless, so senseless, so not needed in light of the horrific massacre of 26 people, 20 of them young kids, in Newtown, Conn.
