Two-for-one burgers on Tuesday evenings and free popcorn anytime are big draws for the Ground Round. It’s a Grill and Bar in a row of restaurants near Columbia Mall, and it seems to be thriving even with the arrival of new neighbors including the Olive Garden.

THE EATBEAT: Blue Moose gives creative variety of menu items
“You’re a brave man,” said the waitress behind the bar when my son, Bob, ordered a PBEB Burger. That is described on the menu at the Blue Moose as a unique combination of burger smothered with peanut butter and topped with bacon and a fried egg. All this for $10.

THE EATBEAT: Capitol Cafe offers lots of choices, rock bottom prices
When I entered the Capitol Cafe, I hung back. It takes time for a visitor to study the many choices of food, juices, coffee and fruit. It was the fruit that most impressed me. There were huge oranges, nice bananas, big red apples on display here and there in clear glass containers.

THE EATBEAT: Bonzer’s sandwich list is long and varied
There are the regulars who gather at the long bar at Bonzer’s Sandwich Pub for food and drink. There are the occasional customers who stop in for “a bite to eat”. And some who come for mid-day meetings in the club room or for billiards.

THE EATBEAT: Mexican Village: Steady, low-key and dependable
The menu stays pretty much the same. The Mexican fare is predictable with mild flavoring. Service is pretty quick. And prices are fairly low for these times — except for the soft drinks that add about $2 to $2.29. I enjoy a quick meal at Mexican Village from time to time.

THE EATBEAT: Expect leftovers when you visit Texas Roadhouse
More than half of the customers at Texas Roadhouse on 32nd Avenue South, leave with white, plastic boxes of leftover food. And the leftovers I took home seemed almost better the second time around.

THE EATBEAT: The Olive Garden, one year later
The Olive Garden is well into its second year in Grand Forks. Judging from the parking lot and the large number of people usually inside, the large restaurant has settled in as one of the busiest.

THE EATBEAT: Giuseppe’s charm lies in its ambience
It’s small, with seating for only 40. It doesn’t try to be all things to all people. And that is the charm about Giuseppe’s Italian Ristorante on DeMers Ave. in downtown Grand Forks.

THE EATBEAT: Kon Nechi Wa knows how to satisfy fans of Japanese cuisine
The small and private tatimi rooms, where customers sit on cushions in complete privacy, are a draw at Kon Nechi Wa restaurant. Others prefer the more traditional seating in booths. The small restaurant with seating for 75 to 85 is the oldest Japanese-style eating place in Greater Grand Forks.

THE EATBEAT: Casa Mexico receives a hearty welcome in East Grand Forks
The decor was beautiful, the menu long and the booth comfortable when I visited Casa Mexico in East Grand Forks. The place, which opened Dec. 19 and has been home to other restaurants, has been redecorated and refurbished in most inviting Mexican style.

THE EATBEAT: Deli draws more and more customers to Amazing Grains
It didn’t take long for us to agree that we had come to the right place when we saw the soup kettle on and the home-baked buns and breads near the little deli corner at the rear of Amazing Grains Natural Food Market on Demers Avenue.

THE EATBEAT: Noodles & Company offers classic comfort and more
It was a note from a friend, Lauren Hornbaker (LH), which got me moving toward the new Noodles & Company restaurant near Columbia Mall. Like many people, LH likes “mac ’n’ cheese” and considers it a comfort food. At Noodles, she almost always orders the fancy version, the Truffle Mac.
