Duane Elmer Sondeland
Duane Sondeland, 79 of Fargo, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2013 surrounded by his loving family, at Eventide Care Center in Moorhead, after fighting a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Duane was born March 21, 1934 in Grafton, ND to Elmer and Josephine (Misialek) Sondeland. He attended school in Grafton, graduating from high school in 1952. Duane was a member of the ND National Guard from 1954-1960. He married Bonnie Duff of Hoople, ND on July 14, 1956.

Agnes Smith
Agnes Smith, 98, of Northwood, ND passed away Monday, April 22, at 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Northwood Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northwood. A visitation will be held Saturday from 12:00 until the time of the service at the church.

Agnes Helen Thingelstad was born to Carl, Sr. and Gina (Tandberg) Thingelstad on January 11, 1915 in rural Northwood, ND, where life on the family farm with five sisters and one brother was never lacking for excitement. She was a baptized and confirmed member of Northwood Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1933, she graduated from Northwood High School and then attended Aaker’s Business College. Agnes married Aris J. Smith and became step-mother to Richard Smith on October 4th, 1950 in Miami, FL. Together they established in Boca Raton, FL, Smith and DeShields, Inc., building materials. They enjoyed many years together sharing homes and adventures in Coral Gables, Boca Raton, Key West, Big Sky, and Nova Scotia. Following Aris’ death in 1988, Agnes began spending summers in Northwood and eventually moved “back home” full time in 2002. Aggie was a staunch Republican who was very supportive of political causes and Veteran’s organizations. She had a very generous heart and thought highly of her family. She will be greatly missed.

Michael D. Barney
Michael D. Barney, age 59, resident of Michigan, ND, died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 17, 2013.

Mike was born October 12, 1953 at McVille, ND, the son of Milton and Charlotte (Bonde) Barney. He was baptized at Melrose Lutheran Church and spent most of his youth on the farm established by his great grandparents located south of Michigan. He attended school in Michigan and graduated with the class of 1971. He then attended NDSSS at Wahpeton. Following his education, Mike was employed by the U.S. Geological Service in Arkansas, Kansas, and Plainview, MN, where he met his wife Jennifer Jacobs. They were married October 19, 1974 in Plainview. They lived in Elgin, MN until moving to Michigan, ND in 1975. Mike worked various carpentry jobs until he established Prairie Builders with Dale “Whoski” Staniszewski in March of 1988. Mike was a lifelong, passionate outdoorsman and he shared his love of it with everyone around him. He was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren who will miss their “Papa Dude”. He enjoyed telling stories and spending time at the shop.

Rodney Webster
Rodney Webster, 81, of Pembina, died Thursday, January 10, 2013, at his home in Casa Grande, AZ. Rodney Walter Webster was born March 25, 1931, the son of William and Clara (Moris) Webster at Hallock, MN. He grew up on a farm near St. Vincent where he attended school, and graduated from the NW School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN in 1949.

He married Jean Anderson on April 1, 1950, in Crookston. They lived in St. Vincent Township, Kittson County, MN, where they farmed. They moved to Pembina in 1983. They celebrated 51 years of marriage before Jean passed away. Rodney was a farmer and loved to visit. His main crops were sugarbeets, grain and beans but he was not afraid of trying new things. He was a director for American Crystal, Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association, Minn-Dak Growers, several elevators and both the North Star Church and Pembina Evangelical Free Church. He enjoyed fishing and golfing in his spare time. January 24, 2003, Rodney married Clarice (Wold) Gustafson of Oregon City, Oregon. Rodney and Clarice enjoyed spending time with their great grandchild, grandchildren, children, siblings and friends.

Runa Sveen, 93, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the Borg Pioneer Memorial Home, Mountain, ND following a brief illness.

Gudrun H. “Runa” Eastman was born on the family farm in Akra Township, Pembina County, ND on February 26, 1919 to Sigurbjorn “Barney” and Christine (Dinusson) Eastman. She was the youngest of six children. Runa grew up in the Akra-Hallson area, attending elementary school at the Eastman School and graduated Cavalier High School in 1937. She later attended Wahpeton State School of Science.
