About 9:30 p.m., the National Weather Service canceled the tornado warning and severe thunderstorm warning for Steele County south and east of Finley, N.D., which had been earlier announced to last until 9:45 p.m. tonight, as the storm system weakened as the daytime energy wore out, said Jim Kaiser, of the weather service’s office in Grand Forks.

Twenty-two-year-old Ryan Stanley Hurd is accused of taking 19-year-old Kathryn Rose Anderson from her Eagan apartment, stabbing her 109 times and leaving her in highway ditch in Steele County. Her body was found near Owatonna Dec. 3. Hurd was later found in his hometown of Tulsa, Okla., and arrested.

He wore what’s known as a “spit mask” — black, see-through netting covering his entire head and an elastic garment covering his mouth. He sat in the courtroom’s center aisle, out of reach of everyone except two burly deputies who stood at his back.
