John Ripley and about 600 South Vietnamese soldiers were ordered in 1972 to ‘hold and die’ against 20,000 North Vietnamese soldiers with about 200 tanks. ‘The idea that I would even finish the job before the enemy got me,’ Ripley said, ‘was ludicrous.’ But he did the job, and then some. Ripley died Nov. 1 at age 69 … a Vietnam War hero.
