Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, column: Give UND smokers at least one warm place
I think it is clear to most that the UND Tobacco Free Policy is draconian and cruel, plus it constitutes an added health threat to those who endure standing outside to smoke in the harsh North Dakota climate.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: Heitkamp, Gulleson defend women’s rights
It is patently un-American to support such government intervention in what should be a woman’s right to choose. North Dakota candidates Heidi Heitkamp and Pam Gulleson will move us away from this Sharia-like thinking that is guiding the patriarchal Republican Party and threatens freedom.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: UND will suffer the most in logo fight
I predict that if the Sioux logo is retained, the divisiveness that is so manifest today in North Dakota will fester for decades and that UND will suffer the most.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: Attacks on Mock reach a new low
The 12 column inches of letters attacking North Dakota secretary of state candidate Corey Mock for columns he wrote for the Dakota Student in 2007 are reminiscent of the “witch-hunts” of the early 1950s.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: GOP rule hurts North Dakota
Forum Communications’ centralized endorsement system is both regrettable and virtually monopolistic. It controls about 60 percent of state’s newspapers. Plus, endorsing Republicans so overwhlemingly just isn’t good for Grand Forks and surrounding communities.

Voting for Mitt Romney or other conservative Republicans in November is voting to dismantle the kind of humane health care provisions Canada and other advanced countries have provided their citizens for decades. Don’t do it.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: No more paved trails in Turtle River park
A meeting scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Turtle River State Park will be an open forum on adding paved trails. As a year-around user of the park for almost two decades, I have observed increasing deforestation, as trails are unnecessarily widened and more green space is paved.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: Pro-nickname event disrespected powwow
The opening of the UND Indian Association Time-Out and Wacipi powwow Friday night at UND was a colorful opportunity for us to celebrate American Indian culture and meet American Indians from diverse regional tribes. Unfortunately, supporters of the Sioux logo were disrespectful enough to hold their event a few blocks away in University Park.

If new U.S. Rep. Rick Berg, R-N.D., joins the repeal effort, he should be invited to speak at every spaghetti-dinner fund raiser held for our fellow citizens who are too poor to afford health care or have exceeded their limits of coverage.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: This ‘N.Y. attorney’ has deep N.D. roots
The fact that attorney Carla Fredericks is a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota seems to escape Al Carlson. A native woman with roots in North Dakota, one who was able to obtain a Columbia University law degree, deserves our respect and not Carlson’s disdain.

Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, letter: N.D. GOP lawmakers show skewed priorities
After joining three other Republican state senators in voting against discussion of extending unemployment compensation to locked-out American Crystal Sugar workers, North Dakota State Sen. Terry Wanzek, R-Jamestown, said lawmakers need to “keep our focus” on the small number of pressing issues designated for the current special legislative session (“Republicans: Crystal issue too complicated for special session,” Page A1, Nov. 8).
