Hal Gershman, Grand Forks, letter: First Night would fit at Alerus
My suggestion, for what it is worth, is that First Night Committee consider moving the entire event to the Alerus Center. This would eliminate the need for shuttle buses, bundling and unbundling children and so on.

First Night can be saved
The autopsy confirmed the original diagnosis of the latest First Night celebration: It was dead. But it can be resuscitated. The fresh air that needs to be breathed into First Night is this: Hold the entire event in the Alerus Center. The city-owned building is underused. And it would be a better use of tax dollars than buying buffalo statues.

About 2,000 attend First Night
About 2,000 people took part in the 15th annual First Night New Year’s Eve festivities in downtown Grand Forks a week ago, a number that organizers said was down “a little” but couldn’t say exactly by how much. Attendance has dwindled at First Night in recent years from all time highs of 5,000, 8,000, even 11,000 people in downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The number of entertainers and performance places has dropped, too, and events this year were in Grand Forks only.

First Night: Great minds think alike
A week ago, this space made the case for holding First Night in the Alerus Center. It turns out that I wasn’t first with the idea. A few days earlier, Grand Forks City Council member Hal Gershman sent a letter to the First Night Committee with the exact sentiment for the alcohol-free New Year’s Eve celebration in Grand Forks.
