THE EAT BEAT: Irishman's Shanty serves breakfast, lunch and dinner
This is the time of year when sugar beet truck drivers or farmers finishing up the harvest need something to eat on the run. So, they put in a call for 10 California burgers or whatever they can pick up and eat quickly. The Irishman’s Shanty stands ready in Crookston. As a matter of fact, you can reach it by going west from Highway 81 over the Thompson Bridge on to Minnesota County Highway 9. Some people call it the KT road, and it goes right by the American Crystal Sugar Co. plant.

RYAN BAKKEN: Eclipsed by Marilyn
While attending the Elton John concert Saturday night, I was surprised to see that Marilyn Hagerty never shared his piano bench. The concert stage also had a big video screen that, shockingly, never showed a single image of our food critic/hometown celebrity. Given her absence from the piano seat and the big screen, I figured that she instead was skating as a right wing on the UND hockey team in the regional in St. Paul. Wrong again. Not that I’m jealous. I have my gigs, too.

LLOYD OMDAHL: Marilyn for Congress, president, maybe queen
Marilyn has eaten more overcooked and undercooked food from unregistered kitchens than have the troops in Iraq. Now that’s courage deserving of a Purple Heart.
