HEALTH: Alzheimer’s disease: New guidelines for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease published for first time in 27 years
Across the United States, every 69 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Nearly 5.5 million already have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Last month, for the first time in more than a quarter century new medical guidelines for the disease were released. Herald reporter Ann Bailey talked with Michelle Barclay, Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota-North Dakota vice president of programs, about the new guidelines. Here is an edited version of their conversation:

Fatty liver disease becoming more common in obese teens
Jake Watters is a typical teenager who loves listening to music, playing video games and annoying his parents. But he also faces a health challenge that used to only be seen in much older people. Fatty liver disease, a condition historically diagnosed in adults with diabetes or alcoholism, is increasingly diagnosed in obese children and teens. Government probes chelation heart disease study
Heart attack survivors are again being enrolled in a controversial federal study of an alternative treatment while the government investigates whether they were told enough about possible health risks. The $30 million study, with 1,500 participants so far, is one of the largest alternative medicine experiments ever launched.
