RYAN BAKKEN: Say it ain’t so, Joe
Critics of NDSU President Joe Chapman’s spending have driven him to resign. I hope they’re happy. They call it extravagance. I wonder what all the fuss is about. His house goes 125 percent over budget. So what? His office undergoes a $238,000 makeover. Chicken feed. His wife rakes in $50,000 for attending meetings? Big deal. He spends $260,000 in the past year from his slush — excuse me, discretionary — fund. Hey, all executives get perks.

RYAN BAKKEN: The easy way to a better Ryan
If it’s works for a political Ryan, it should also work for a newspaper Ryan. I’m referring to the Ryan Resume Ratio. The RRR was conceived by Paul Ryan, the Republican candidate for vice-president of these United States.

OUR OPINION: Sanny Ryan is the Anti-Potter
“It’s a Wonderful Life” would have been a whole different movie if a Sanny Ryan-like character had been the one sitting behind Henry Potter’s big desk.

RYAN BAKKEN: What's in a presidential name?
"My interest about first names comes from today’s politics," columnist Ryan Bakken writes. "In November, we will elect a president named Barack, Mitt or Newt. None of those names rank in the top 1,000 of names selected in 2010."

Ryan takes the plunge
Have you ever wondered why so many fundraisers involve inflicting pain on the do-gooders? I did on Saturday, when I voluntarily took the Polar Plunge for the benefit of the Special Olympics.

We wandered into this boom without proper state planning, but it’s not too late to recover and put in place a long-term plan that brings common sense back into the equation.

VP pick Ryan brings long record to dissect
Rep. Paul Ryan's record runs deeper than his signature budget and Medicare ideas. Mitt Romney's running mate is against abortion rights, has a top rating from gun-rights groups and backed sending troops to the wars. But in conflict with fellow Republicans, he's defended wage laws favored by unions.

Here’s Ryan’s news quiz for November
In November, the world tipped upside down. A black man was elected president. The UND women’s hockey team was more successful than the men’s team. And gas cost less than half of what it did in July.

Bakken's advice to DirecTV and KXJB-TV: Let’s Make a Deal
Jackie Hanson of Grand Forks is one of 25,000 DirecTV subscribers in the Red River Valley who are unable to watch CBS shows. That leaves Hanson — and about 24,999 other households — seething. Now Herald columnist Ryan Bakken has an idea.

Ryan Taylor, Towner, N.D., column: Let’s ensure this boom is ‘Lasting Harvest’
I believe the special session is an opportune time to do two things regarding energy development impacts. First, I believe we should immediately add $50 million to the Oil and Gas Impact Fund to help the counties and communities impacted by oil development. Second, the state should create a 'Lasting Harvest' commission to address the long term needs of energy-impact areas.

Ryan Taylor, Towner, N.D., column: Lawmakers shower dollars on corporations
Our state has changed. It’s growing. That means we need better roads, housing and infrastructure. We have more children in our communities and more students who want to take advantage of our schools and colleges. But the response of the state’s Republican legislative leaders is to complain about the budget required for that growth, then make ideologically selective cuts and give state revenues to political friends.
