Lake of the Woods: Rainy River remains slow for this time of year, and most of the walleyes continue to stage in the lake outside Lighthouse Gap in about 30 feet of water. Good reports also are coming from Zippel Bay in 18 feet of water, the Twin Islands off Long Point in 26 feet of water and, farther north, Knight Island in 23 feet of water.

The big walleyes were active opening weekend, and the fishing was excellent, with many charter boats reporting 100-fish outings. It wouldn’t be exaggerating to say Lake of the Woods served up the best fishing in the state for Minnesota’s walleye opener.

Area fishing report
Lake of the Woods Four-Mile Bay, Morris Point Gap and outside the Lighthouse Gap have been best for walleyes in 8 to 12 feet of water. Anchored and jigging with a frozen shiner minnow has been the most productive technique. On windy days, many anglers have done well in the Rainy River with the same presentation in 6 to 8 feet of water. Fishing on the west side of the lake is improving, according to reports from local conservation officers.

Wednesday was the last day of the spring walleye season on the Rainy River and other Minnesota-Ontario border waters. After a slow start, this turned out to be one of the better spring seasons on the river in many years, according to most reports.

With the walleye season closed on Lake of the Woods, anglers have turned their attention to the catch-and-release sturgeon season on the Rainy River. Crappies are biting on Maple Lake, and good reports are coming from the coulees and channels that flow into Devils Lake.

The Rainy River has produced spotty walleye action in recent days; the water is clear, and the current is slow. Anglers targeting sturgeon reportedly have done well. The Rainy now is open past Silver Creek east of Baudette, Minn., but not yet to Baudette.

Lake of the Woods: Roads are plowed, and vehicle travel is an option even after 16 inches of fresh snow, according to Lake of the Woods Tourism. On the south shore, the best walleye action is coming from 20 to 24 feet, and saugers are biting in slightly deeper water.

Lake of the Woods: At the Northwest Angle, the 21- to 25-foot reefs are producing walleyes and good-sized perch. Along the south shore, anglers are finding walleyes, saugers and the occasional pod of perch in 32 to 36 feet of water. Work west of Pine Island and north of Morris Point with gold- or glow-colored jigging spoons.
