MARILYN HAGERTY: With brooms in hand, curlers are ready for new season
Dear Shirley, There are a few stubborn trees still clinging to their leaves. Most of them are naked now in Grand Forks. The rush is on to finish up the fall chores. And there is a feeling of anticipation these days. We are waiting for the inevitable appearance of winter. We don’t know when or why. And we are in no rush!

MARILYN HAGERTY: Bring blankets, chairs, picnic lunch to City Band concert

Theirs was a quick trip to Washington, D.C., and this week the World War II veterans who went on the final Northern Valley Honor Flight have had time to savor the experience. Most of them are well into their 80s now, and most of them otherwise would never see the memorial erected in their honor.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Selam from Ethiopia awaits snow – whatever that is
She has never seen snow. Selam Haile Gullicks knows very little about ice. But it didn’t take long for the 16-year-old from Ethiopia to figure out what hockey was all about when her new Grand Forks family took her to a UND men’s hockey game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Up on a roof without a ladder
The telephone rang the other morning and a man said, “Marilyn?” I said, “Yes, this is Marilyn.” He said, “Marilyn,” again. I said, “Yes this is Marilyn, and who are you?” He said, “I am Ritchie, and I am up on your roof. My ladder slipped and I can’t get down.”

MARILYN HAGERTY: Doctoral candidates at UND reach final hurdle on long, arduous road
When you follow a loved one into the intensive care unit, there are no guidelines. You don’t even know what questions to ask. You don’t know what the patient can hear. Families work hard to find a relative or friend with whom they are comfortable asking about what is happening. The situation is difficult financially. There is stress and physical discomfort.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Blizzard stirs memories of 1941 St. Patrick's ordeal
It was bad enough. The Christmas blizzard of 2009 will long be remembered for its tenacity and its record snowfall of 25 inches in Grand Forks. During the week of the storm, I traveled the interstate highways of North Dakota with my cell phone in my pocket. I listened to radio reports. I had checked the weather maps on television. I got reports online before starting out. And I kept thinking of M.A. Johnson.

RYAN BAKKEN: Eclipsed by Marilyn
While attending the Elton John concert Saturday night, I was surprised to see that Marilyn Hagerty never shared his piano bench. The concert stage also had a big video screen that, shockingly, never showed a single image of our food critic/hometown celebrity. Given her absence from the piano seat and the big screen, I figured that she instead was skating as a right wing on the UND hockey team in the regional in St. Paul. Wrong again. Not that I’m jealous. I have my gigs, too.
