MARILYN HAGERTY: With brooms in hand, curlers are ready for new season
Dear Shirley, There are a few stubborn trees still clinging to their leaves. Most of them are naked now in Grand Forks. The rush is on to finish up the fall chores. And there is a feeling of anticipation these days. We are waiting for the inevitable appearance of winter. We don’t know when or why. And we are in no rush!

Red River shaping up in time for Easter
Dear Shirley, The Red River has settled down for the time being, and we are heading into Easter weekend in the Red River Valley. I guess we will worry about a second crest in another week or so. I think the Easter Bunny may have to get around on water skis this year. And I hope those rabbits that were cavorting around your place at Tucson Estates when I was down there in March will bring some Easter eggs to you.

Cross the bridge when you come to it -- unless it's closed
Dear Shirley, Something tells me I should have stayed in Arizona for a while. Things aren’t going too well around here this week. Along with the threat of flooding in the Red River Valley, we have had more snow to shovel. We have basements to check. Sandbags to pile.

Lull is prelude to June explosion of activity
Dear Shirley, I wish you could have been with us in Bismarck as we celebrated Jack’s graduation from Century High School. It was a joyous event. And, of course I drove across North Dakota thinking of him as a little boy. He was our first grandchild. He was quite a rascal. He used to like it when I took him up to the Grand Forks Herald to see Jeff Tiedeman. He knew Tiede would always have some candy at his desk.

Girl Scouts turn Thin Mint cookies into Dakota Dirt
Dear Shirley, Hazel Churchill wasn’t the most stylish or talented woman in Pierre, S.D., when we were growing up. Many people probably didn’t know who she was. But I have never forgotten her. She was my Girl Scout leader.

Dear Shirley, Even though we are Danish, I have to admit that the Norwegians think of everything. This is Syttende mai — the Norwegian Independence Day — and they are serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their lodge at 1401 Ninth Ave. S. in Grand Forks.

North Dakota vacation stretches west to Medora
Busy motels and restaurants must be good for the economy. And we saw plenty of bustling restaurants and motels during the past week traveling around North Dakota, headquartering in Bismarck. It seems as though people are vacationing close to home. And there must be a ripple effect from the 69th annual Sturgis Bike Rally that is running this week in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
