Louise Irene Helgeson

Louise Irene Helgeson, 94, Grand Forks, died March 16, 2013, at Valley Eldercare. She had resided at the VMH homes since her serious accident in 1979.

Louise was born August 29, 1918, in Park River, North Dakota, the daughter of Ole and Birgette (Halldorson) Pederson. She graduated from the Walsh County Agriculture School in Park River and Mayville State Teacher’s College. She taught school in the Fordville area.

Louise was born August 29, 1918, in Park River, North Dakota, the daughter of Ole and Birgette (Halldorson) Pederson. She graduated from the Walsh County Agriculture School in Park River and Mayville State Teacher’s College. She taught school in the Fordville area.

On October 26, 1941, Louise married Oscar Helgeson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Park River. They moved to Grand Forks in 1945 where Oscar worked for Minnesota Dairy.

Louise was active in her three daughters’ schools and also at United Lutheran Church where they were longtime members and she served as president of the Ladies’ Aide and the Bethesda Society. She was also active in the Sons of Norway.

Louise is survived by her daughters: Bonnie (Peter) Graham, Eaton, CO; Enid Ottem, Arcadia, CA; and JoAnn Mellem, Largo, FL; grandchildren: Daniel (Angie) Graham, Brenda (Clint) Fisher, Lisa Ottem, Christopher Ottem, Steven Mellem, Suzanne (Drew) Bergstrom, and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, a grandchild, and son-in-law Ken Mellem.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m. at United Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior.
