John M. “Jack” Woods, age 82 of Forest River, ND passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.John M. Woods was born August 10, 1930 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Walter and Myra (Jamieson) Woods. He graduated from Forest River High School in 1948 and attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND and later attended the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. He served in the United States Army, serving in Korea. Following his discharge in 1954 he returned to Forest River. Jack was united in marriage to Margaret Roe on July 30, 1955 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ardoch, ND. The couple made their home in Forest River where Jack farmed with his brother Robert until retiring in 1993.

Jack was a member of the Forest River Community Church, serving on the church board. He was a member of the Forest River Cemetery Board for many years. He was a member of the Forest River American Legion Post, the Forest River Masonic Lodge, served on the town council, was a member of the Forest River Volunteer Fire Department and drove school bus for the Midway School district. Our dad loved farming but his true love was his wife Margaret and their family. Dad loved spending time with his grandchildren and seldom missed an opportunity to attend their sporting events.
Jack is survived by his wife Margaret, Forest River, ND; children: Colleen (Mark) Alphson, Forest River, ND; Coke (Tom) Tengwall, Spicer, MN; Cyndy (Jim) Scanlan, East Grand Forks, MN; Robert J. Woods, Forest River, ND; Cathy (Steve) Perkins, Spicer, MN; ten grandchildren: Lisa (Steven) Schuster, Kristin Alphson, Chris and Erik Tengwall, Bri, Jaclyn and Joe Scanlan, Betsi Jacobson, John and Nick Perkins. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Jack was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, John, brother Robert and sisters: Eileen and Annette.
Funeral services will be Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Forest River Community Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may also call at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Forest River Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Forest River American Legion and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the Forest River American Legion or Altru Health Foundation.
