John G. “Jack” Mahowald, 74, of Grand Forks, ND, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at his home with his family by his side.John Griffin Mahowald was born January 27, 1938 in Fargo, ND. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic School before attending St. John’s Preparatory School in Collegeville, MN. Jack served in the United States Army Reserve in the early 1960’s before attending St. John’s University and then the University of North Dakota where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business. Jack married Margaret Anne DeMers on April 23, 1966 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks, MN. He owned and operated Dacotah Leather Company in Grand Forks for over 5 decades. He was a private pilot with a passion for flying. He was an avid reader and sports fan with a love for auto racing. He enjoyed traveling annually to Grand Cayman Island, B.W.I.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann “Mugs”; a son, John (Stacie) Mahowald, Richfield, MN; 7 grandchildren, Lauren and Morgan Mahowald, Savage, MN, Conner Knipp, Abby Knipp, Jadyn Knipp, Landon Knipp and Halle Knipp, all of Richfield, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ward and Claire (Logan) Mahowald and a brother, Ward Mahowald.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Saturday.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND, in the spring.
Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota National Guard.
