S. Louis King, C'47 passed away at a rehab center at Markeson, Wisconsin on Saturday, January 5, 2013 after suffering a massive heart attack and multiple strokes.
He was third son of Abram R. and Vaughn (Owens) King born in Sidney Nebraska on July 24, 1927. Both parents were natives of Cando, North Dakota. After the family returned to Cando, Louie attended school there from first grade through his freshmen year of high school. He played and lettered in both football and basketball at Cando High School and was an active member of the Methodist Church.
In August of 1943 he moved with his family to Grand Forks where he enrolled as a sophomore at Central High. He played and lettered in both football and basketball that school year. After that he joined the US Navy. When World War II ended he returned to Grand Forks Central for his senior year in 1946-47.
During that school year he was part of a significant accomplishment never achieved before or since by a class "A" high school in North Dakota. Along with a great group of teammates Grand Forks went undefeated in football and won the State Championship in a play-off game against Mandan. In basketball that same group of athletes lost but one game and defeated an unbeaten Bismarck team to win the state class "A" tournament. Louie was elected captain by his teammates and was named to the Class "A" all-tournament team.
Following graduation from Central High, he enrolled at Linfield College in Oregon where he majored in Physical Education and played and started as center/linebacker for four years. During his playing career he was elected captain and named All Conference and later was nominated for induction into the Linfield College Sports Hall of Fame.
After graduating from Linfield College in 1951, Louie returned to Grand Forks to accept a teaching/coaching position at his alma mater. He was named head track coach and assistant in both football and basketball. IN the summer time he coached the American Legion baseball team.
After coaching for three years at Central, he accepted the head football coaching position at Cavalier. That lead him to receiving an offer to serve as a graudate assistant and North Dakota State University where he served as an assistant football coach and simultaneously earned a Master's degree in educational counseling and guidance. From NDSU he joined the football coaching staff at Delaware Valley College in eastern Pennsylvania.
Following his experience at DVC he accepted an offer to embark on a career as "Director of Youth Activities" with the YMCA, along with serving in the "Big Brothers" organization. At this time he returned to Grand Forks and married Diane Lanning on December 27, 1956 at United Lutheran Church with many of his Central High School championship teammates and friends involved in the wedding service. Diane and Louie later had two sons, Samuel Louis and Phillip Ray King.
Louie's YMCA career took him to Abington Pennsylvania, Dearborn and Flint Michigan, Winona Minnesota, and Seattle Washington. After his "Y" career ended, he moved to Madison Wisconsin where he got involved in organizations to help the "homeless, woe-be-gone and rejects" in our society. He always had a strong sympathy and empathized with that portion of our society. Simultaneously with his work, he established a prison bible study ministry at the Wisconsin State Prison in Waupun and he married Kay Henning on November, 23, 1984. Louie led this ministry for the last 30 years of his life, in addition to conducting summer baseball camps in Wisconsin.
He is survived by his wife, Kay (Green Lake, WI); sons, Sam and Phil (Madison, WI); stepdaughters, Pam Matson (Medinah, Ill), Beth (Princeton, WI), Bonnie Michael (Greensboro, NC); stepson, Scott (FL); and several grandchildren including caring grandson Harrison Pelland. Survivors also include brothers, Ronald (Lois) King (Mechanicsburg, PA), DeWayne (Peggy) King (Waukesha, WI), Harold (Barbara) King; C '54; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his special parents and a step son, Mark. God bless you Louie, and may you rest in piece.
