Calvin H. Sholes
Calvin H. Sholes, 89, resident of 4000 Valley Square - Wheatland Terrace, Grand Forks, ND passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012 at home.Calvin was born December 13, 1923 the son of Hjalmer and Ella (Holman) Sholes in Crookston, MN. He graduated from Crookston High School and served in the US Army in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After his honorable discharge, he graduated from University of North Dakota with a degree in education. He taught and was principal in Gilby, ND. He later taught at Valley Jr. High School, Grand Forks for 29 years. Calvin was chosen as one of only 12 teachers nationwide to teach a historical class at Harvard. He was recognized as a noted historian of the American Revolutionary War and Civil War. Calvin was married to Lorraine Knutson in Crookston. Together they raised their children in Grand Forks where he taught them to live history. Lorraine preceded him in death on July 22, 1997.

Cal was a lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion. He was an avid reader, sharing his knowledge with many. The family extends its sincere gratefulness to Wheatland Terrace for their loving care of our dad.
Cal is survived by his daughters, Penny Wedin-Gorden (Grant Gorden), Bismarck, ND, Janet (John) King, Owatanna, MN; sons, Michael (Suzanne) Sholes, and Les (Donna Wolfe) Sholes both of Grand Forks, ND; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Lorraine; grandson, Chis Swingen; great grandsons, Tyler and Gunner Christianson; his parents, Hjalmer and Ella Sholes; sisters, Clarene Katsoulis, Hazel Langaard, Myrtle Sholes; infant, brothers, Clifford and Millard Sholes.
Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home - Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, S. Washington St., Grand Forks.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota National Guard.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND.
